06 Apr Davina Oriakhi & Preyé – “Vanity”
“Vanity” produced by Gabriel Ryder is a 90’s R&B/Soul influenced duet written and performed by Davina Oriakhi and Preyé, two outstanding artists whose voices harmonize perfectly as they sing about the meaningless chase for material possessions and fickle pleasures.
Preyé tells us how she was led to the song: “I was reading my Bible on a rainy afternoon and came across two verses that spoke volumes to me:
Ecclesiastes 1:14 “I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.”
Mark 8:36 “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” There is nothing new under the sun, everything has been done before. The way money comes and goes makes me wonder if money actually exists. If I have an endless stream of it, would I be satisfied? Would my thirst be quenched if I drink from it? All this made me ponder. I ended up working on and lamenting about it on a song with my girl, Davina.”
Davina explains the birth of the song: “With a lot of my songs, I can’t really point out where the inspiration is from, until I’m done with the first draft. In that moment, I am just a vessel. I realised “Vanity” was taken from a verse from my favourite books in the bible, Ecclesiastes and sharing the first draft and the beat by Gabriel Ryder, with Preyé was truly transforming for the song as the collaboration process was a beautiful journey. She totally understood the vision, and that’s the beauty of collaboration, being on the same page and bringing out the best in each other.”
